컴퓨터 및 모바일 네트워크의 발달과 함께, 대중 음악 소비자들이 음악을 소비 하는 방법이 변하고 다양해지면서 음반(Album)이 갖는 의미 또한 변하게 되었다. 이로 인하여 국내 많은 대중가수들이 음반을 발매할 때, 음반 패키지 등에도 많은 투자를 하고 있다. 특히 아이돌 가수를 주로 기획하는 음반기획사에선 시각 디자인 요소(Visual Design Elements)를 활용하여 부가산업으로써 확대될 수 있게 많은 심혈을 기울이는데, 이러한 노력의 결과, 국제 디자인 어워드에서 국내 음반 패키지가 매해 수상을 하며 세계적으로 그 수준을 인정 받고 있다.
이러한 앨범 패키지에서 음반 커버 디자인은 앨범에 대한 정보를 시각화하여 보여줌과 동시에 음반 구매자나 청취자의 시각적 욕구를 만족시키며 그 시대적 시각 표현 트랜드를 구축하며 또한 관련 디자인 표현요소를 형성해 왔다.
이 연구는 2000년 이후 발매된 국내 음반 커버 디자인의 시각적 표현 특성을 사진, 일러스트, 타이포그라피, 하이브리드적 표현 위주의 4가지 유형으로 세분화하고 동 시대적 표현 경향 및 트랜드를 분석 이해하여 관련 디자인의 기초 연구 자료로 활용 하는 데에 그 목적이 있다.
이를 위한 연구 방법으로는, 온라인 음악 서비스 업체인 지니(www.genie.co.kr)社가 제공하는 2000년부터 2015년까지의 연간챠트에서 상위 30개의 음반의 커버, 수집된 총 480개의 음반 커버를 범위로 한정하여, 위의 4가지의 유형으로 음반 커버 디자인 표현 특성을 분석하고 그 배경을 이해 하고자 하였다.
그 결과 음반 커버의 표현요소의 트렌드 변화는, 첫째, 사진 위주에서 타이포그래피로의 비중의 확대, 두번째, 시리즈 형태의 음반 커버의 증가, 마지막으로 사진 합성을 통한 음반 내용의 스토리텔링 전달 방식의 표현 방식으로의 변화이다. 이러한 배경에는 소비자가 활용할 수 있는 음악 기기와 그 GUI의 발전, 음반 패키지의 다양화 및 대중음악에서의 선호되는 음악 장르의 다양화 등의 배경적 이유를 확인할 수 있었다.
본 연구는, 음반 커버 디자인이 끊임없이 변화하는 음악 산업에서 단순히 음반의 부속물로써가 아닌 독립적인 객체로 표현 트랜드를 이해하고, 표현 방법에 영향을 주는 요인을 분석하여 독창적인 음반 커버 디자인 및 관련 디자인 개발의 기초 연구 자료로 본 연구 결과가 활용 되었으면 한다.

With development of computer and mobile network, customer’s music consuming ways have been changed and diversified, so the meaning of album has been changed. Because of this, many of Korean singers have invested in album packages. Specially, some record companies who is mainly planning idol singer(or band) are devoted to visual design elements what to be able to be expanded as supplementary industry. As a result of these trying, many album packages and design elements what are associated with singer are awarded in international design awards and the level has been recognized worldwide. In album packages, these album cover designs not only show some information visually about the album but also promote the album by satisfying the consumer and listener for purpose and they have formed a trend.
This study categorized album cover designs into four groups as Photography based type, Illustration type, Typography type and Computer graphic type and found the design trend in album cover design. And it is expected that the result of this study to be refereced as basic research data proposing a design development of album cover design according with the trend after being released in Korea after 2000.
For this study, selected 480 album covers, from top 30 songs in annual chart from 2000 to 2010 provided by Genie, online music service supplier and checked the trend of album chart in various ways and found the backgrounds.
As a result, the trend of album cover designs are as follows. First, increasing in the portion of typography in photography based type, second, increasing of album cover series and finally, increasing of cover using collages. Backgrounds for this trends are as follows. development of devices, consumer and listener can use or utilize, and UI of the device, diversfication of album packages, and finally diversfication of music genres what people prefer.
This study expect that the result of this study to be refereced as basic research data for developing album cover design as a independent object in album rather then accessory of album, and for satisfying the consumer’s music consuming ways in the everchanging music industry.
