스팀펑크는 빅토리아 시대의 패션, 기술, 산업화 혹은 역사로부터 영감을 얻는 하위문화의 하나였으나 최근 리테일 산업의 주요 트렌드로 부상하고 있다. 이 연구의 목적은 스팀펑크 영화에 나타난 복식의 표현양상을 분석하는 데 있다. 연구는 분석의 근거를 마련하기 위해 문헌 연구를 실시한 후, 선별된 3편의 스팀펑크 영화의 DVD 시스템으로부터 캡처한 이미지를 주로 활용하여 복식의 표현 양상을 조형적 특성과 내적 의미로 구분하여 분석하는 방법으로 진행되었으며, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 스팀펑크 영화에 나타난 복식의 조형적 특성은 형태에 있어서 레트로 스타일, 밀리터리 스타일, 오토메이톤 스타일, 고스 스타일이 두드러졌으며, 색채에 있어서는 세피아, 검정, 그레이, 카키와 금색, 은색, 황동색 같은 금속색상이 두르러졌다. 또한 소재에서는 ‘따뜻한 & 차가운’, ‘부드러운 & 딱딱한’, ‘자연적인 & 인위적인’, ‘투박한 & 정교한‘과 같은 이질적인 소재들의 역설적 조화가 주요 특성으로 파악되었다. 둘째, 스팀 펑크 영화에 나타난 복식의 내적 의미는 전통성, 혁신성, 낭만성, 저항성, 순수성, 기괴성, 다원성, 획일성으로 파악되었다. 이를 종합해 보면, 스팀 펑크 영화에 나타난 의상은 전통과 혁신, 낭만과 저항, 순수함과 기괴함, 다원성과 획일성 같은 상반된 의미들이 조합된 이종결합으로써 하나의 새로운 양식을 창조해 왔음을 알 수 있다.

Steampunk is emerging as a mainstream trend in retail industry, although it has so far been seen as a subculture inspired by the technology, industrialization, culture or history of the 19th century. The aim of this study is to identify and describe expression aspects of costumes appearing in steampunk films. This research has examined the costumes displayed in three steampunk films, using images captured from DVD systems after reviewing literature to find possible bases of analysis. The results of the study are as follows: First, the formative characteristics of costumes appearing in steampunk films can be classified by: 1) form(style): retro style, military style, automaton style and goth style 2) color: sepia, black, grey, khaki and metallic colors such as brass, silver and gold 3) material: harmony paradoxically composed with disparate materials such as warm & cold, soft & hard, natural & artificial and coarse & exquisite. Second, the internal meanings of costumes appearing in steampunk films are categorized as traditionality, innovativeness, romanticism, resistance, purity, grotesquerie, pluralism and uniformity. Taken together, the findings demonstrate that costumes appearing in steampunk films constitute an entirely new mode. This mode is characterized by integration in the film costumes of themes in high contrast, such as tradition & innovation; romanticism & resistance; purity & grotesquerie; pluralism & uniformity.
