Insidious 5 was officially confirmed in October 2020 and in an exciting bit of news, the horror sequel will mark star Patrick Wilson's directorial debut. Scott Teems – who worked on Halloween Kills – has written the script, based on a story by Teems and franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell.

After a trip into the past with the third and fourth movies, Insidious 5 will bring back the Lambert family after their supernatural encounters in the first two movies. While it may come as a surprise to some that a fifth Insidious film was greenlit, especially given Insidious: The Last Key (the fourth film) received the worst reviews of the series to date, it was also the highest-grossing of the series with $168 million worldwide (on a budget of $25m).

Given the immense box office taking and the continued love of Wilson, a fifth movie actually feels like a no-brainer. But what can we expect from Insidious 5? Here's everything you need to know.

Insidious 5 release date: When can we expect Insidious 5?

Insidious 5 will be released in cinemas on July 7, 2023, assuming there aren't any release date shifts.

In August, 2022 the movie finished wrapping (per Wilson himself) which means the film should stick to its summer 2023 release date.

Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins will all be back as Josh, Renai and Dalton Lambert, with Andrew Astor as middle child Foster Lambert.

Despite her death in the first movie, Lin Shaye has been an ever-present in the series as Elise Rainier, so we'd expect her to be back again as Elise's ghost – along with Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampson as Elise's colleagues Specs and Tucker.

It's not yet clear if Barbara Hershey will return as Josh's mother Lorraine, but we do have three newcomers confirmed for the new movie: Succession star Hiam Abbass, Sinclair Daniel, and Peter Dager in undisclosed roles.

Insidious 5 plot: What will Insidious 5 be about?

Along with the announcement of the start of production, we got our first official synopsis for Insidious 5:

"Set ten years after the end of Insidious 2, Josh Lambert heads east to drop his son Dalton off at an idyllic, ivy-covered university. However, Dalton's college dream becomes a nightmare when the repressed demons of his past suddenly return to haunt them both."

Talking about why he decided to make Insidious 5 his directorial debut, Wilson did offer some hints about what we can expect, and how the fifth movie connects to the events of the first two movies.

"We rarely get the opportunity to come back 10 years later, especially if you think about the lore of Insidious and this family, specifically me and Ty, [with] our characters being hypnotised, what does that do to a family after 10 years?" he explained.

"Watching Dalton go to college and what does that do? Watching a young man go to college and all the new experiences and feeling like an outsider trying to fit in. He's got this ability that he doesn't even know that he has of being an astral projector and traveller.

"After so long, are we still hypnotised? Is there still that trance? What does that do to your life? What does that do to your marriage? And then what does that do for a father and son relationship?"

In case you needed reminding, the end of Chapter 2 saw Josh and Dalton allowing themselves to have their memories suppressed again so they'd forget all about The Further and all the demons it holds, including the Bride in Black and Lipstick-Face Demon.

We can't see it being an Insidious movie without a trip into The Further, so we'll wait and see what persuades Josh and/or Dalton to head back into the spirit realm.
