요새 코로나 때문에 온라인개강, 혹은 온오프개강을 고려하는 학교들이 대다수이다.
이를 영어로 정확하게 표현하는 방법을 배워보자.
온라인은 쉽다.
단어 online을 그대로 쓰면 된다.
next semester is gonna be online.
다음학기는 온라인이 될것이다.
last semester was online
저번학기는 온라인이었다.
온라인의 반대인 오프라인은 어떻게하면될까?
그대로 offline을 쓰면 될까?
지난학기는 오프라인이었다.
우리말로는 크게 문제없지만
영어로 그대로 옮겨서
last semester was offline이라고 하면 이해는 하지만 자연스러운 표현은 아니다.
last semester was in person 혹은
last semester was on campus 라고 주로 표현한다.
자 이제 온오프가 섞인다!
온오프병행! 은 영어로 어떻게 될까
섞인다!라고 한걸 기억해라

혹은 hybrid, 혼합을 쓸수도있다.

이렇게만 해줘도 의미 전달이 된다
뒤에 생략된것은
a hybrid (of in-person and online)
이 될것이다.
**구글에 온오프병행을 쳐보니
brick and click 이라고 한다 하는데
원어민들은 이런 표현 아무도 모른다.
비즈니스 용어라 그,쪽을 공부한사람이면 알수도 있겠지만 일상적으로 쓰는 말이 아니다.
구글에 나오는게 이런표현들밖에 없어서 온오프병행에 대해 포스팅해야 겠다고 생각했다.
progress와 process를 보면 둘다 진행하다라는 의미로 쓰여있어서 정작 어떤 상황에서 어떤걸 써야 할지 막막할때가 많다.
게다가
1 The work is progressing and should be completed soon.
2 The work is proceeding [=going] well.

이런 예제를 보면 주어도 같고 구조도 같아 보여, 정말 난감해보이기 그지 없다.
그래도 두 단어의 뉘앙스를 고려해 해석해보면
1. 그 일은 진행(진전,진척)되고 있는중이다. to improve or develop over a period of time
2. 그 일은 진행(계속)되고 있는 중이다. to continue being done 계속 행해지다 <<진행되다>>
로 해석하는게 좋다.
즉 progress는 진척,이나 나아짐 향상(improve)의 의미를 갖고 ,
반면 proceed는 그런 나아짐의 의미 없이 그냥 계속(continue)이란 의미이기 때문이다.
좀더 매끄러운 해석을 하고 싶지만 그게 쉽진 않다.
그리고 밑에 문장도 비슷하게 느껴질때가 있다. 하지만 미묘한 뉘앙스차이가 존재한다.
3.Our taxi seemed to be progressing very slowly
4.Passengers for Miami should proceed to gate 25.
3번의 progress는 천천히 앞으로(forward) 움직인다는 뜻이다.
반면
4번의 proceed는 특정방향으로 움직이다라는 의미를 뜻한다.
progress처럼 forward의 의미가 없다.대신 particular direction 특정방향을 나타낸다.
예제에서도 gate25 로 움직(이동)이라는 의미

Literally: 문자 그대로

Segregate: 사람들을 인종 종교 성별에 따라 분리시키다. 떼어 놓다 (고립).
